The GermAwayUV Horticulture Disinfection Chamber is designed for controlled ultraviolet treatment of flowers, plant trimmings, fruits, herbs, vegetables, and finished horticultural products. The chamber combines high-output ultraviolet lamps with a 100% quartz plate shelf to expose specimens from above and below.

The system is now available with your choice of UV-A, UV-B, or UV-C lamps, allowing the chamber to be configured for different horticultural treatment, research, exposure, and microbial-control applications.

Select the Ultraviolet Wavelength for Your Application

Each chamber is supplied with one complete lamp configuration selected at the time of purchase. The chamber design, quartz shelf, double-sided exposure, controls, coverage area, and safety features remain the same; the installed lamp type determines the ultraviolet wavelength range produced by the system.

UV-A Configuration

Wavelength Range: 320–400 nm

Rated Lamp Life: Approximately 1,000 hours

UV-A intensity may decrease approximately 30% after 500 hours and 40% after 1,000 hours. Biannual lamp replacement is recommended when the chamber is used regularly.

UV-B Configuration

Wavelength Range: 290–320 nm

Rated Lamp Life: Approximately 1,000 hours

UV-B intensity may decrease approximately 20% after the rated operating period. Annual lamp replacement is recommended when the chamber is used regularly.

UV-C Configuration

Wavelength Range: 100–290 nm

Primary Germicidal Output: 253.7 nm

Rated Lamp Life: Approximately 9,000 hours

UV-C intensity may decrease approximately 20% after the rated operating period. Biannual lamp replacement is generally recommended when the chamber is used regularly.

Designed for Horticultural Treatment and Disinfection

Fungal contamination, including Botrytis cinerea, gray mold, storage rot, and powdery mildew, can damage flowers, plant material, fruits, herbs, vegetables, and finished horticultural products if it is not properly controlled. Many conventional treatment methods rely on fungicides or other chemical agents that may be unsuitable for sensitive products or certain production processes.

The UV-C configuration provides a nonchemical method of exposing specimens to germicidal ultraviolet energy. UV-A and UV-B configurations are available for applications requiring their respective wavelength ranges while preserving the chamber’s controlled enclosure, programmable operation, and double-sided exposure design.

Three Keys to Effective UV-C Microbial Treatment

1. Wavelength: The UV-C configuration uses lamps that produce germicidal ultraviolet output at approximately 253.7 nm. This wavelength is commonly used to disrupt the DNA and RNA of exposed microorganisms and interfere with their ability to reproduce.

2. Intensity: Effective treatment requires sufficient ultraviolet energy. The UV-C configuration uses 16 high-intensity lamps and provides more than 800 watts of total UV-C lamp power for rapid treatment inside the chamber.

3. Exposure: Ultraviolet treatment is limited by shadows and physical obstructions. The GermAwayUV Horticulture Chamber uses a 100% quartz plate shelf and lamp exposure from above and below to reduce untreated shadowed areas and provide more complete specimen coverage.

Double-Sided Exposure Through a Quartz Shelf

Standard glass, plastic, fabric, and many other common materials block or substantially reduce ultraviolet transmission. The chamber therefore uses a quartz plate shelf designed to allow ultraviolet energy from the lower lamp bank to reach the underside of the specimen while the upper lamp bank exposes the top surface. This double-sided design helps deliver more thorough and repeatable coverage than a single-direction light source.

In addition to its horticultural treatment capabilities, the chamber is designed for repeated use in production, laboratory, greenhouse, and processing environments. Its core construction is based on GermAwayUV ultraviolet laboratory chambers used by universities and research facilities throughout the world.

Designed, engineered, and manufactured in the United States, the chamber provides a controlled and repeatable ultraviolet process without requiring operators to manually hold or reposition a UV source during treatment.

  • Removable Shelf: The shelf can be removed to simplify loading and unloading. Additional shelves may be ordered so that one batch can be prepared while another batch is being treated.
  • Quartz Glass Shelf Insert: The quartz plate permits ultraviolet energy from the lower lamp bank to pass through the shelf and reach the underside of the specimen.
  • UV-Filtered Safety Glass: The viewing window allows operators to observe the specimen and treatment cycle while helping block hazardous ultraviolet radiation.
  • Automatic Door Interlock: Opening the chamber during a treatment cycle automatically turns off the ultraviolet lamps to help prevent accidental exposure.
  • Production-Grade Construction: Designed for frequent operation in horticultural, processing, research, and laboratory environments.

Determining the Appropriate Treatment Time

Required treatment time varies according to the selected wavelength, lamp intensity, organism, specimen type, product density, distance from the lamps, surface orientation, contamination level, and shadowing. Because real-world conditions vary, a single treatment time cannot be guaranteed for every application.

The dosage calculator below may be used as a starting point when developing and validating a repeatable process. For example, the previous UV-C dosage calculation for Botrytis cinerea indicated a minimum exposure time of approximately 36 seconds under the specified test conditions. Actual production processes should be tested and validated for the material and conditions being treated.
